There are more than 40,000 wild horses in government holding facilities across the western United States. These horses will never be returned to the wild and the cost of their care is funded by taxpayers. Roundups continue annually, but adoption rates are at a historic low.
In 2016, Samantha Szesciorka and her adopted mustang Sage journeyed more than 1,100 miles around northern Nevada in support of wild horse adoption. Beginning in the geographic center of Nevada, the long ride took a total of 74 days to complete.
